What is known as Laksa (outside of Penang) approximates what is Curry Mee here. Confusingly, outsiders refer to Penang’s curry mee with an additional epithet “white”. This is due to the white coconut milk gravy the ingredients of noodles, bean sprouts, squid, cockles, taupok, shrimps are immersed in. Authentic Penang Curry Mee will also have cubed pigs blood although this ingredient is now often added as an option. The addictive nature of this dish is in its unique chilli garnishes and it would be sacrilege if one ate this dish without the chilli garnishings.
1) Kopitiam @34 Lorong Seratus Tahun (7.30am to 3pm). This shop has been around for at least two generations and we regard this stall as the mother of Penang Curry Mee. Going back to this stall always bring back childhood memories of extremely spicy hot but addictive chilli garnishings! A big bowl of chilli on your table gives diners the freedom themselves to have as much or as little chilli in their bowl of noodles. This is our favourite Curry Mee stall in Penang.
2) Oo White Coffee Koopitiam on 262 Lebuh Carnarvon. ( 9am to 3pm. Closed on Wednesdays). This stall is one of the better curry mee stalls in George Town heritage area.
